News was limited until recently when reports came out of Cartagena, Spain, that filming forVenom 3would start in a few days.Murcia Todayreported that theVenom 3crew has been building sets for weeks in Los Mateos, a neighborhood in Cartegena. According to production manager Tate Aráez, Los Mateos was chosen because it closely resembles some streets in Mexico. The Cartagena City Council also confirmed that filming was approved in Calblanque, a nature reserve on Spain’s coast featuring beautiful beaches.

So, what does Cartegena have to do with theVenom 3plot? Eddie Brock’s last appearance on the big screen was in aSpider-Man: No Way Homepost-credits scene. In the scene, Eddie and Venom are in a Mexican bar struggling to grapple with the number of super-powered beings in the MCU. Eddie decides to find Peter Parker until he’s sent back to his universe by Doctor Strange’s spell. The scene ends with a shot of a bit of a symbiote left behind.

The symbiote has made several appearances outsideHardy’sVenommovie franchise, most notably in Sam Raimi’s 2007Spider-Man 3. The symbiote bonds to a host, giving the MCU several options to incorporate it with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Since Cartagena was selected for its visual similarity to Mexico,Venom 3may, at least in part, continue that storyline. However, there are still questions about howVenom 3will play out within the context of the multiverse, especially with the appearance of Eddie Brock’s San Francisco inSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

However, the connection to Mexico might have nothing to do with the last time viewers saw Eddie Brock. Set photos from Spain suggest that at least part of the film will occur on Diá de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday celebrating the dead. Until Sony Pictures decides to release more information, fans can only speculate aboutEddie Brock and Venom’s next adventure.

Venom 3is expected to be released in October 2024.
