Wednesday’s season finale featured a number of shocking twists and turns. One of its most shocking developments was the death of Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie), who was killed trying to uncover the plot against her school. Weems, however, may have a trick up her sleeve: according to Christie, the character may yet return to the series.

Wednesdayhas been absolutely soaring. The series, which starsJenna Ortega, recently broke another viewership record over at Netflix. Ortega plays Wednesday Addams in a new adaptation ofThe Addams Family -here, Wednesday is portrayed as a teen living at a boarding school for outcasts: Nevermore Academy. She discovers that the school has plenty of secrets, and Weems is one character Wednesday suspects and distrusts the most throughout the season.

In an interview withDigital Spy, Christie teased that fans haven’t seen the last of Principal Weems just yet. She coyly responded to a question about her character’s fate with, “We haven’t seen her put in the ground, have we? I feel like Larissa Weems would not really be prepared to entertain or be dominated by anything as commonplace as death.” Speaking further of her character’s personality and motivations, she stated, “I think that Larissa is doing her best to be embracing of the world as a whole. I think she’s taken that chance, and it’s unfortunate that it has ended up leading to her demise. […] She is very firmly cemented in her outsider status. Due to that, she has a healthy disregard and suspicion for normies and those in the normie world. I think she’s also intelligent enough to know that she wants to develop a harmonious relationship between the outcasts at Nevermore and the normies, because she understands that she wants the community to be integrated.”

What this means forseason 2 ofWednesday, should it get the greenlight, is unclear. In the season finale, it’s revealed that Principal Weems only wanted what was best for her school, and the true perpetrator of the crimes around the school was Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), actually named Laurel Gates, who then seemingly kills Weems with a syringe. Thornhill then resurrects her pilgrim ancestor to wreak havoc on the school before being stopped by Wednesday, who mourns Weems.

Weems wasone of the best characters inWednesday. From her very first appearance, Christie’s presence is impressive. She and Ortega play off of each other incredibly well, and her role in the series definitely has plenty of room for expansion going forward.

There was a mysterious air about Principal Weems which wasn’t fully explored during season 1. She, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and Gomez (Luis Guzman) have prior history with one another, with Weems seemingly holding a grudge against Morticia. That aspect is touched on very briefly in the series, but isn’t explored in depth. And, at times,Wednesday’s take on Nevermore Academyfelt stifling, but Christie’s performance never dragged.

Wednesdayis available to watch on Netflix.
