Summary
Now thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2has finally hit store shelves, Marvel fans seem to be wondering what happens next with this franchise. While Insomniac Games is currently focused on deliveringMarvel’s Wolverine, there are likely even moreMarvel’s Spider-Manadventures on the horizon. Not only will a third game probably get released at some point, but the studio may also be interested in expanding the franchise in other ways. And one such way may be with a Venom-centric adventure.
Just like withMarvel’s Spider-Manbefore it,Spider-Man 2introduced a new web-swinger to the mix withthe addition of Venom. Even though he works a lot differently than Peter and Miles, he also shares many similarities and has a fascinating story waiting to be told. Because of that, he seems like the perfect protagonist for a new half-sequel over the next couple of years. Even if it simply takes the form of a smaller DLC pack, exploring Venom further could be a fantastic treat for fans of the titular character.

Insomniac Can Tell a Pre-Spider-Man 2 Story
One of the likeliest next steps fora Venom-centric video gamewould be to tell a story that takes place before the events ofMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. Since the Venom symbiote seemingly died at the end of that game, it may be hard to further build out the character after the credits rolled. However, that should not stop Insomniac from taking a trip back and showing the character’s journey. While it may seem like he spent much of his time trapped within a test tube or latched onto Harry Osborn, there may still be space for a story somewhere.
This Venom game could show players what happened to the symbiotebefore Harry Osborn officially merged with it. Oscorp may have had it for years, but there is likely more to its story than that because the organization had to have learned about it somehow. Letting players see the adventures of a character like Eddie Brock discovering the symbiote and letting them watch as he grapples with the power it contains could be a great treat for fans of the franchise. And the power that they could play with could be a thrill ride. However, a story like that may also be pretty hard for the studio to do within the current canon.
Insomniac Can Further Build Out the Franchise With a Venom Sequel
A Venom half-sequel would imply thatthe game takes place afterMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, so the studio may want to build out the franchise with a new story instead. But it also seems to have written itself into a corner when it killed off the symbiote. Because of that, it seems like there really are no more stories left to tell as it served as the definite end point. And yet, Insomniac may still be able to pull something off.
While it may seem like Venom is dead, there is a chance that he survived somehow. There is always the possibility that a little bit of him was able to escape or was left somewhere, which may be able to allow him to grow and expand like the end-credit scene ofSpider-Man: No Way Homeimplied. Some fans may find that a cheap way to bring the character back, but not bringing him back feels like a major missed opportunity. The concept could lead to an extremely unique entry that follows a new protagonist as they attempt to control their newfound powers against insurmountable odds.
The Venom symbiote is such an interesting character so it would be a shame if this were the last players saw of it. There is a reason that theVenomfilms have been so popular, and Insomniac should really tap into that popularity with its next entry. Even though the future of his story may not be clear, the studio has at least shown fans that it can be trusted to treat the characters with respect in whatever it chooses to do next.
