Netflix released a teaser for their 2023 slate of films, including a release date forRebel Moon, showcasing the first pieces of footage for what to expect regarding theStar Wars-inspired sci-fi space epic. In the scenes shown,Rebel Moonlooks to capitalize on the Snyder idiosyncrasies that make the director stand out as a filmmaker.Snyder was offered a job atNetflixto create director-driven films after the controversies with Warner Bros. regarding the DCEU fallout ofJustice Leaguein 2017.Rebel Moonwas initially supposed to take place within theStar Warscanon but was rejected by Disney. At this time, Snyder decided to reworkRebel Moonas an original film with Netflix. This was followed by Netflix releasing a promotional image ofSofia Boutella as Kora, who Snyder describes as a “reluctant hero from a peaceful colony who is about to find she’s her people’s last hope.” The footage shows a spaceship landing on an alien planet with quick flashes that feature its main cast in firefights against what is assumed to be conquering legions.
Netflix describesRebel Moonas an “epic new universe." This echoes previous reports that saidRebel Moonwill be split into two parts, meaning there are a lot of stories to explore in the world ofRebel Moon. If proven successful, fans may also expectRebel Moonto branch off into spinoff films, not unlike Snyder’sArmy of the Deadfranchise.
Fans of Snyder andStar Warsshould prepare themselves, as the public discourse surrounding the director may soon shift from comic book movies toStar WarsandRebel Mooncomparisons.
